Hair Composition

Our hair is all beautifully unique, and when it comes down to it, all of our hair is made up of a very complex structure with three main parts: the cuticle, the cortex, and the medulla [1].

Hair Diagram

The complexity of the hair comes from its behaviors. The hair acts as if it is alive, being sensitive to its environment and grooming practices that can lead to clinical damage of the hair shaft, and the cuticle is the first to experience these changes.

The cuticle is the outermost protective layer formed from dead cells overlapping layers, forming scales. When damaged, these dead cell scales are lifted causing the hair to become porous, brittle, and dull.

The hair as a whole is made up of 4 key components:

  1. Keratin: the main component of hair fiber
    • Made up of 18 amino acids (primarily cysteine)
    • Insoluble, fibrous, rigid, and resistant while still being very flexible
  2. Water: the amount of moisture the hair has is critical for its shape, shine, appearance and elasticity
    • 30% of the hair’s own weight should be water if in ideal conditions while up to 45% of its weight if the hair is weak
  3. Lipids: makes up 3% of hair components that affect humidity and mechanical properties
    • Integral hair lipids include sterols, fatty acids, and ceramides bound to the keratinized cell surface
    • Surface lipids from sebum include TG, waxes, squalene, and cholesterol
  4. Melanin: makes up 1% of the hair and gives the hair its color

Types of Damage to the Hair

The most common types of damage to the hair comes from a variety or origins:

  • Heat: styling tools, blow dryers, etc.
  • Environmental: sun damage, hard water, saltwater, etc.
  • Over processing: color damage and bleaching
  • Mechanical: tight hairstyles, brushing

Damage to the hair creates breakage, dryness, and dullness. Fortunately, Seppic has multiple ingredients clinically proven to help fight all kinds of hair damage to restore hair to its natural, healthy self!
